Field Notes #17
6th Sense
Alongside this Field Note is the companion to #9, one layer down. That one gave you category and calculation in the subconscious. This is the same idea in the body, which is the layer My Now and My Room actually train — and it answers the question I get asked most.
THE GUT IS A SENSE
By my early teens I was a small combat veteran. I could sense danger before any of the five senses could explain it, because the five senses were too late. It is not a mystery, and it is not magic. It is a sixth sense, and everyone can have one. What is your gut already telling you that you have not listened to?
Notice, Don't Name
The cover is a cat's eye.
If you have worked with me, you’ve noticed I read non-verbal communication uncannily well. I am not a guru. It is muscle memory in the gut, built by repetition — and other people build it in far less dramatic environments than mine. The outfielder standing exactly where the ball arrives has it. The surgeon who senses the vessel about to burst has it. The first responder has it.
The hack is simple and hard:
Notice, don't name. The naming is what pulls you back up into your head.
Put the predator's gimbal eye on right now. Am I on the menu? What is on the menu?
Leave everything else to later, if at all. The primitive is not wondering how it feels about itself.
Then reps. My Now works the internal signal, My Room the external one.
Here is where the whole series came from. My friend Jermaine Andre — MMA world champion, Hall of Famer, and my son's dojo — was asked to prepare indicted white-collar professionals for prison. Deeply physical, hair-triggered, and the first lesson is to stop talking, because words are treated as violence and answered as violence. My clients heard about it and asked whether we could teach the same attention without the origin story. I said, of course. That is where My Instincts came from.
"You have a sixth sense. You can activate it and pay attention. You don't have to be a combat vet to act like one." — Robert (Sherpa) Millar
By the end of this, you will know that My Now and My Room are not a mystical add-on. They exist to accelerate the elements that produce that gut, without requiring the environments that produced mine.

You do not need my childhood or Jermaine's dojo. You need reps.
