Field Notes #14

Every time I hear about the bear-in-the-woods meme, I cringe. But this isn’t about how men could be safer… or the impact on why this became a viral meme. The meme just spurred another topic into my head…

Successful people tend to scare other people. It’s not always intentional; in fact, despite the well-known assholes, it’s rarely intentional, if for no other reason than successful people are far too busy to waste time trying to appear scary.

But, despite the lack of intent, I scare people. When I’m under stress, many people would prefer to meet a bear rather than deal with me. The fact that, at the point when they are seeking to avoid me, I am least likely to notice them doesn’t change the cringe. They are heading to the metaphorical safe bear in the woods rather than deal with me.

Who is in your woods?

THIS IS NOT TRAINING. IT'S CALIBRATION.
