Field Notes #20

My Life Blind Spots

Alongside this Field Note is My Life Snapshot: the load-bearing walls, and what happens when one of them is threatened. This is the deepest of the three My Success programs, and the one where I hammer guided clients hardest. So it is only fair that I go first.

ON THE ROAD

Blind spots only matter when you are moving. If I am sleeping, sitting down, not on the road, they do not matter much. I am highly active in a challenging life, and my family is ambitious too — so between us we create the conditions for storms. How much is in the bank before you change lanes again?

Five, and the Storm Conditions

The cover is the earth and the moon. My wife and son are the sun and the moon; my whole little world moves around them.

  • The call-sign and the storms checked, not deadly. Before another lane change, I check the balance: how much is in the bank emotionally, physically, spiritually, to handle one more? Not a judgment on myself. Just a reading.

  • Identity — THE RED LINE. The Knight. Threaten my wife or son, even reasonably, and I will overreact and make a mess. Pretty Hulk-like. Because I know that, in any novel situation, I quickly see that the Knight isn’t showing up and that place is protected, and I remove the threat from the adjacent lane before it becomes one.

  • Energy — checked, not deadly. Atlas. A bull in a China shop. The collision is my intolerance of the dispassionate and the lethargic — you're making my soul tired — which comes across as condescending and judgmental, and is mostly my own ignorance about how to locate and relate to people who do not run at that speed.

  • Legacy — checked, not deadly. Adam. A humanist. I can sit with people beyond the pale because I see their humanity. The collision is bullies. When I was a pastor, I ran Monday Musings beside an elite university, and some very clever undergraduates bullied with their intellect and won arguments they should have lost. They ended up intellectually on the floor, because I have an intellect too, and I will overreact without noticing.

  • Aspiration — THE SHRUG. I do not invest enough in Bohemian and freedom. If life becomes too much of a nightmare, I go away for a minute. It mostly affects me.

"This isn't about information. It's about formation. It takes time. It takes repetition. If you're not willing to do that, I don't even know why you're listening to me." — Robert (Sherpa) Millar

By the end of this, you will notice the red line here isn’t about me at all. It is about who is standing behind me, and what I will do to anyone who gets near them.
