Field Notes #31

You've watched the others, so you'll ask: where is the fourth one, the breath of awe? Beyond mastery, and beyond this series. You can't integrate with awe before you have the glasses of mastery. Attention, awareness, agency.

THE PAGE RUNS THE OTHER WAY

The library has three layers you can practice in. Awareness is the subconscious: My Success, how you think. Attention is the somatic: My Instincts, what your gut already knows. Agency is the scripted: My Mastery, the story underneath. The programs run in that order because it is easiest to hardest: the subconscious sits nearest the surface, My Leadership just below calculation, and inside always comes before outside. That is why My Success is where I tell you to start.

But at the pause-and-ask on this page, the order flips. Attention comes first. Walk into any room, and before you have a thought about it, a primitive hunter buried in the back of your brain has already scanned it for threat and for opportunity. Only after you feel the room do you think about the room. The page takes advantage of that. You may never get to My Now or My Room; the somatic is cued in you anyway, and you will pick up cues from whatever session you're in.

Then awareness: comprehend, think, understand. Then agency, and for this one I named the cover, which I hadn't done for the first two. The books are mine, a gift from my wife. We tell ourselves stories. True or not, they are incredibly effective, and once told, we rarely go back and rewrite them. At the pages, from easiest to hardest, the subconscious sits nearest the surface. My Leadership sits just before you ever reach the sheet; a story starts to form:

  • I feel there's something important here.

  • I think there's something important here.

  • I know there's something important here.

Once that locks in, it's a script. You'll engage it automatically, and every repetition strengthens it. A good story about this program before you start the exercise sheets changes everything about what happens on them. Tell yourself one.

I stop there, because the next layer down has a privacy setting. Go watch the My Mastery blind-spot videos if you want to know why.

"You want to tell yourself a story before you begin to practice. That's going to change everything." – Robert (Sherpa) Millar

Field Note Card: Ten minutes, one take, black and white. Third of the five integration Field Notes. Prompted from the Session Three practice page in every self-guided workbook. In the video, I say session four; I was wrong, and I left it in. See #32 for why.

Third of five. This one answers the question a self-guided client asked in Field Notes #4: why the workbook doesn't ask what do I feel? The hand is what asks it.
