Field Notes #22
My Room Blind Spots
Alongside this Field Note is my My Room Snapshot, and the first red line in the set that I get wrong in my own favour — which turns out to cost other people anyway.
CHECK YOU AT THE DOOR
I change every room I enter simply by entering it. If I am not attentive to that, everything I then read is wrong, because I left myself out of the equation. Despite years of teaching this, my Achilles heel is that I undervalue my own weight. What is your X worth, honestly?
Five, External
The cover is playing cards, chips, and dice — the primitive hunter activated, looking at what is on the menu.
Somatic Room — THE RED LINE. The first blind spot in this program is me. People ask how a man who talks this freely about what he is good at could undervalue anything. Here is how: I carry a feeling inside my body that I am stupid. So I think I am smaller than I am, and I put more force into a room than it needs. I am far more careful than people imagine when weighing my actual contribution. Check you at the door. Put you on the scale.
Curiosity — A SHRUG. Opportunity. It collides with people who don’t want to be asked questions and don’t want to ask any. That is your thing. It is not my thing.
Certainty — checked, not deadly. Place and purpose. I would bet my life on it, and it distracts other people considerably: they are either offended by the extremity of belief in an alien deity outside time and space, or impressed by the risk-taking it produces. I am aware of that and not especially attentive to it — which is exactly what puts it in the middle tier rather than the shrug pile.
Confidence — checked, not deadly. Things will work out. God will provide. My old call-sign, before this work and before therapy, was Con Man — because the job was to walk into a room of strangers and get them to invest in something they could only verify after they died, and I could do it in sixty seconds. That is a hefty quantity of confidence to hand people. I am careful now not to throw the Kool-Aid at you.
Clarity — A SHRUG. Control is an illusion. If you keep trying to control outcomes with your hair on fire, I will notice and move past you. That is on you.
"It's not awareness, it's attention. Just because I'm aware of something doesn't mean I'm attentive to it." — Robert (Sherpa) Millar
By the end of this, you will have the distinction that the whole program turns on. Awareness is knowing it’s there. Attention is noticing it while it is happening.

Curiosity and Clarity get shrugged in five of my eleven Snapshots. That is not laziness. That is where the gold is.
