Field Notes #23
My Choice Blind Spots
Alongside this Field Note is a warning that takes up the first four minutes of the video. My Choice has no self-guided version and no workbook you can buy. I almost did not make blind spots videos for these three at all. But the Snapshots are public, and you will have questions.
DANGER, WILL ROBINSON
Most scripts are simply operative, and they work. Distorted scripts are always-and-forever attachments to something that happened once — annoying rather than damaging. Traumatized scripts are a different category entirely. I cannot tell a distorted script from a traumatized one at a distance. So what happens if you watch me be relaxed about mine?
Five, at the Scripted Layer
The cover is my wedding ring.
Care — THE RED LINE. My own choice distortion is not belonging. We don't do that, Robert. Forty years in the house and still not feeling I belong. It is irritating, not deadly — and that is precisely the danger. If you see me being cavalier with a distorted script, you may be cavalier with a traumatized one. I might be a gateway drug for you to sabotage your life. So I tap the ring as a touchstone: my distorted scripts are irritating; yours might be deadly.
Certainty — handled carefully. When I am prepared and flexible, place and purpose carry me to “I am ready.” That agency self comes from a great deal of therapy you may not have had the privilege of.
Confidence — handled carefully. Same reason. I do not want the psychological layer of the Kool-Aid to splash you.
Curiosity — A SHRUG. As in My Room. I will notice it. I will not be responsible for it.
Clarity — A SHRUG. Same.
The gate exists for one reason. You do My Success, you do My Instincts, and then you and I have a conversation — and no is a full sentence that needs no punctuation. I have graduate-level training, and I am a first responder. Stop the bleeding, get you to a doctor. I cannot do that through a camera.
"My red line is that I would be cavalier with your well-being. I work really hard not to hit you with that." — Robert (Sherpa) Millar
By the end of this, you will understand why the door is shut, and that it is not exclusivity. Agency requires responsibility. This work is expensive in time, talent, and treasure, and there is no law anywhere that says you must master it. It is not better or worse. It is my story.
