Field Notes #25

My Crisis Blind Spots

Alongside this Field Note is the last of the three careful videos, and the statement of what My Mastery's agency actually is. Three red lines across three programs: care, gentleness, and this one. None of the three is a blind spot from the Snapshot. They are postures I hold toward you.

DO NO HARM

My crisis distortion is helplessness. Stuck, unable to go forward or back, hanging on by the fingernails. And my default is to fix it — so the challenge a friend set me was not to fix it, and not to let you fix it. What would it cost you to open your hands?

Five, and a Refusal

The cover is the challenge coin — Worth, Values, Identity, Purpose. Take a drink of something before this one. Lighten the mood a minute, because the content does not.

  • Embrace helplessness — THE RED LINE. Twenty years of my wife saying I'm just trying to tell you about it; I don't need you to fix it. As a boy, I ran down the stairs to confront dangerous adults to protect other children. Do not admire that. I should have hidden like everybody else. That script was probably traumatized, and I have done the work on it. The distortion underneath — that helplessness is not okay — is still here.

  • Certainty — handled carefully. As in the other two.

  • Confidence — handled carefully. As in the other two.

  • Curiosity — A SHRUG.

  • Clarity — A SHRUG.

And the refusal. My Mastery would be an outstanding fix-it tool. When people saw what it could do, the advice I got was to make it a product line with enough disclaimers that I could not be sued. I refused. To the people it is wrong for, it is nuclear waste, and I cannot go back and undo a landmine. So: no self-guided version, and no access without a year of work first. Its agency is do no harm — do not hurt yourself or others simply to achieve a goal.

"I built Just Now so you can't fix it. I don't offer to fix it. You can locate and relate. I deal with blind spots because you can't fix them." — Robert (Sherpa) Millar

By the end of this, you will see what the three red lines have in common. Care, gentleness, helplessness. They are the three places where harm happens when agency is missing — which is why they are the blind spots for a series that could otherwise do real damage.

Not fatalism. Acceptance. There is a difference, and I am not very good at it either.
