Field Notes #29

Repetition / Repetition / Repetition

This is the first of five Field Notes about the page everyone skips. You watched the videos, did the reflection, found your word. Then you reached the exercise sheet and treated it as homework. That is the moment the program either works or doesn't, and these five are about why.

HEARD, UNDERSTOOD, PRACTICED

Every program has two promises. One: the program can profile you accurately. Two: practice will move what it finds back down into a category- subconscious, somatic, and on through the layers- until it is two and two, not 17 × 34. The second promise is the one people don't collect on, because activation and reflection bring you to the point of seeing your blind spot, and at that point people normally stop.

The three settings of the title on the cover are three states of the same word:

  • Information. I heard what you said.

  • Education. I understand what you said.

  • Integration. I have practiced what you said.

Don't scan the page. Don't pass on it just because you heard or read what I said and now you understand. If it isn't integrated, then when you change lanes, bootstrap a moment and collide in your blind spot, understanding won't matter. You'll have the answer in hindsight: yep, that was my fault, and that is all you'll have.

Here is what the practice actually does. Dominant hand on your chest; reach for a breath of awareness (My Leadership, My Culture, My Life), attention (My Now, My Room), agency (My Choice, My Conflict, My Crisis), or awe (the Butterfly Effect). Activation locates. I can touch bias: My Leadership, section two, Vision and Provision. Reflection relates. There's a moment in the last seven days when I put a thumb on the scale and valued someone less because of a me mentality. Repetition, same day, same time, integrates, until one day the noticing happens live, before you move, not in hindsight.

It took me six years to reach the point of making this series. The programs came out of my own practice. I had an aptitude for this and integrated it largely on my own, but the blind spot I failed to notice was that what is glaringly obvious to me isn’t obvious to everyone else. There are things in my own life I have no aptitude for at all. Those I have to hear again and again, sit with, and then practice, practice, and practice. That is what these five are for.

"Without integration, you won't avoid the collision. And this program will only be half as valuable as it could be." – Robert (Sherpa) Millar

Repetition, repetition, repetition. When you get to the exercise sheet, take it seriously.

Field Note Card: Ten minutes, one take, black and white. First of the five integration Field Notes, Field Notes about Field Notes. Prompted from the Session One practice page in every self-guided workbook (My Leadership, My Culture, My Life, My Now, My Room), before the exercise sheet. Assumes the hour before the workbook, especially #1, #9, and #3.
